Anyone who owns a small or big boat knows that if one doesn't run a maintenance of the submerged part of the boat for a long time, problems are likely to arise. Reduction in speed, increased fuel consumption and engine wear are a big problem, but can be easily solved. It's not very different from dental prevention which, if correctly applied, eliminates various dental problems. The only difference are the costs. As a matter of fact, the costs of dental prevention eliminates future expenses of the dentist, but in our case the saving is immediate in the form of fuel economy and reduced engine wear. And the proof of all this is when motors start to make smoke a lot due to the stress.
The process we adopt avoids the operating diver to perform strenuous handwork and reduces the pollution of the water surrounding the propeller, thanks to a hydraulic power unit, which is the motive power of the entire machinery, and a rotating brush equipped with non-aggressive fibers for the various types of metals and even wood. In addition to this a PVC pipe with a buoyancy is connected to the rotating brush and thanks to a vacuum pump the dirty water is sucked into a mechanical purifier, which is able to retain particles up to 20 micron.
We also have brushes with various types of fibres for pipes and trestles or platforms, depending on the state of the surface to be cleaned, such as the discut, which is able to clean surfaces with 10 cm of fouling. The brushing machine can adapt to any surface: large or small pipes or base pylons for platforms.
This kind of operation has really important applications. The innovation lies in the fact that we can do it underwater which is also the reason this brings better results than on dry land due to constant temperature.
Propellers wear for various reasons. Whether they are used a lot or very little, wear advances because of galvanic currents (even if protected by a suitable anode or zinc), because of the high abrasion friction with water and due to salt water which is is by nature a big corrosive.
The wear manifests itself as tiny holes and lines on the surface of the propeller, which reduces the efficiency over time, but even worse they causes new grips for vegetation and crustaceans, which increase their colonization of the surface. Moreover it causes micro cavitations and resistance against water even if when the propeller is clean.
For this reason we have adopted a suitable equipment to regenerate every kind of propeller.
The operation begins with the cleaning of the propeller to see which parts are the most worn. Then we carry out a diagnosis of the entire propeller which is divided with a suitable marker into different parts, from the most worn (usually the ends that cut the water) to the less worn (usually the parts closest to the axis).Every single parts is then compared with a samples of wear and cataloged. Thanks to a Roughness Comparator Scale we can comprehend the grade of wear and the relative treatment to use, which will be noted on a module. Once the propeller is divided into sections of wear, it is polished with suitable tool for the type of wear itself and every section will receives a different treatment and this allows to regenerate the propeller uniformly as if it were a mirror.
